Growing Chives from Seed

Chives, related to onions, are a handy herb to have near the kitchen door to add flavour to all kinds of dishes.

They are also hardy and you can keep harvesting over and over for a number of years. Just snip off what you need and more will grow back. They can be grown in pots or in the vegetable patch in full or part sun. If you are growing in pots place them in a position where they are protected from harsh summer afternoon sun. Chives dislike extreme heat and extreme cold.

Sow your seeds in a quality vegetable potting mix or well composted soil in shallow farrows. Cover and water.

Once the plants are established they are tolerant of dry periods. You will generally be able to start picking within two months of planting your seeds. Continue to harvest to promote new growth.
