Growing Beetroot from Seed

Beetroot is an easy and rewarding vegetable to grow.

Plant your seeds around 1cm deep and 10/15cm apart, in a free-draining rich soil, in a sunny position. Plant directly in your garden beds as they don’t like to be transplanted. Beetroot can be grown year round in most climates in Australia. Avoid extreme heat / cold times of year.

Keep the soil damp throughout the growing period to allow regular growth and to avoid the tubers cracking.

Most beetroot varieties are quite fast growers and within a couple of months you will have full sized beetroot to harvest. However, you can always pick them when they are smaller, and this is when they are usually more tender (though not necessarily as sweet as when larger).

Don’t forget you can also eat the leaves. You could harvest these as microgreens when the plants are very small as you are thinning the seedlings, or cut some off as the plants are growing (ensure you don’t cut all the leaves off), or simply wait until you harvest the entire plant.
